Move Over Cats, a New Dog Musical Is Opening in NYC; Tails Opens June 18

Following a developmental run earlier this spring, Tails, a new musical about mutts hoping to be adopted, will get a commercial Off-Broadway production. Previews begin June 7.
The new show, opening June 18 at the 45th Street Theatre, has book and lyrics by Mark Masi and music by Jess Platt.
Producer Eric Krebs (Laughing Liberally, Golf, Little Ham) announced the production details May 25. Tails is directed and choreographed by Christopher Scott, the resident director of Amas Musical Theater. His credits include Golf, the Musical and The Big Bang.
"Tails tells the story of five dogs in a dog pound who wait and hope to be chosen for adoption," according to production notes. "The dogs include: Speagle, the love smitten mutt; Sophie, the show dog; and a new puppy surrounded by mystery."
The cast will include Bethe Austin, Miguel Cervantes, William Thomas Evans, Gerry McIntyre and Tracey Stephens.
Musical direction is by Mat Eisenstein. The creative team includes scenic designer Peter Feuchtwanger, lighting designer Mitch Dana and costume designer Cheryl McCarron.
"We are having great fun bringing Tails to life because this full book musical is of interest to dog lovers, musical theatre enthusiasts as well as families," stated producer Krebs. "We hope to show our audience a 'dogs eye view' of the human world, complete with love story, great sacrifice, and much humor."

Bark! The Musical has been a hit at The Coast Playhouse in California for more than 350 performances and counting — with regional productions in the works. A cast of six performs in the work by composer David Troy Francis and lyricists Robert Schrock, Jonathan Heath, Danny Lukic and Mark Winkler. Kay Cole directs and choreographs.

Sean Grennan, whose nuptial-minded musical, Married Alive!, was a hit for American Heartland Theatre in Kansas City, is developing A Dog's Life for the resident company. Grennan is penning music and lyrics, and Leah Okimoto is composer. It will appear in AHT's 2006-07 season.
