At a posh ceremony in Manhattan on May 23, the New York Drama Critics Circle bestowed their yearly kudos on what they considered to be the best play and musical, in addition to two special citations, of the just finished theatrical season.

Alan Bennett’s critical darling The History Boys was honored as best play, while The Drowsy Chaperone received the best musical prize. Additionally, director John Doyle, musical supervisor/orchestrator Sarah Travis and the company of Sweeney Todd were cited for their work, as was Grey Gardens star Christine Ebersole. This was the first time in the organization’s 71 year history that special citations were awarded.

At left, The Drowsy Chaperone’s Casey Nicholaw and Bob Martin, as well asSweeney Todd himself Michael Cerveris and Maria Friedman (The Woman in White) are seen at the ceremony. Below, Russell Tovey, James Corden and Samuel Barnett – three of The History Boys - are seen at the 2006 New York Drama Critics Circle Awards, held at the Algonquin Hotel on West 44th Street.
