The Musical of Musicals — The Musical! Begins London Previews March 28

By Andrew Gans
28 Mar 2006

The Musical of Musicals — The Musical!, which satirizes the musical theatre genre, makes its U.K. premiere at Leicester Square's Sound Theatre beginning March 28.

Directed by Julian Woolford, the artistic director of Sevenoaks Playhouse, the production will officially open March 31 and will play through April 22. The cast includes Joanna Ampil, Susannah Fellows, Geoffrey Abbot and Ian McLarnon.

The creative team also features Ben Stones (design), Steven Harris (choreography) and Dean Austin (musical direction).

The Music of Musicals — The Musical!, which was the longest-running show in the York Theatre Company's 35-year history (it played 256 performances there), reopened at Dodger Stages, Stage Five, where it played nine previews and 318 regular performances before closing in November 2005. Featuring music by Eric Rockwell, lyrics by Joanne Bogart and a book by Rockwell and Bogart, The Musical of Musicals is a satire of various musical theatre genres. One story is played five times, each in the style of a different musical theatre composer or team, including Rodgers and Hammerstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim.

The Musical of Musicals — The Musical! was nominated for a 2004 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, five 2004 Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical, and a 2005 Drama League Award for Best Musical. The original cast recording is available on the Jay Records label.

Joanna Ampil's London credits include Hair, Miss Saigon, Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Misérables. Susannah Fellows has been seen in the West End companies of Beautiful and Damned and Mamma Mia!. Geoffrey Abbott's U.K. credits include Carousel and Fiddler on the Roof as well as the tour of Scrooge. Audiences have been Ian McLarnon in the West End companies of Sunday in the Park with George and Pacific Overtures.

The London production is being presented by NML Productions, Melanie Herman, the York Theatre Company and Martian Entertainment, in association with Louis Bluver.
