Judy Kaye and Jason Graae to Be Featured in Fats and Fields Concert; Song List Announced

By Andrew Gans
09 Jan 2006

The work of Dorothy Fields and Fats Waller will be saluted at a Jan. 31 concert at the Merkin Concert Hall.

Presented by The New York Festival of Song, Fats & Fields will be held at 8 PM. Jennifer Aylmer, Judy Kaye, Jason Graae, James Martin and Steven Blier will all be part of the event; Blier is the evening's artistic director and Michael Barrett the associate artistic director.

Fats and Fields, a centenary tribute to the legacies of lyricist Fields and singer-songwriter Waller, premiered in Feb. 2005 at Merkin. The evening, according to production notes, traces "their wide-ranging, occasionally criss-crossing musical paths from the Cotton Club to Broadway to Hollywood, via Tin Pan Alley."

Concertgoers can expect to hear such tunes as “Crazy ‘Bout My Baby,” “My Man Ain’t Good for Nothing But Love,” “Don’t Blame Me,” “There Must Be Something Better Than Love,” “Snake Hips Dance,” “Say Yes,” “Blue Again,” “He Had Refinement,” “April Snow,” “Pick Yourself Up,” “Spreadin’ Rhythm Around,” “Livin’ in a Great Big Way,” “Lonesome Me,” “There’s a Man in My Life,” “The Panic Is On,” “Jitterbug Waltz,” “Welcome to the Holiday Inn,” “Remind Me,” “Baby, Dream Your Dream,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” and “Sunny Side of the Street.”

Judy Kaye recently ended her run in the Broadway mounting of Souvenir. She played the role of Rosie in the Broadway company of Mamma Mia!, a part for which she received a 2002 Tony Award nomination. Kaye won the Tony for her performance as Carlotta in the New York production of The Phantom of the Opera and also received a Theatre World Award for her work in On the Twentieth Century. Kaye also starred on Broadway in Ragtime, and her two solo recordings are titled "Diva by Diva" and "Songs from the Silver Screen."

Jason Graae starred on Broadway in A Grand Night for Singing, Falsettos, Stardust and Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, and appeared in the Hollywood Bowl concert version of The Music Man as Marcellus Washburn. His Off-Broadway credits include roles in Forever Plaid; Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh; Olympus On My Mind; and All in the Timing. Graae also starred in the Reprise! concerts of Of Thee I Sing!, Anything Goes and The Boys from Syracuse. Graae is now playing Helen's Hideaway Room on Eighth Avenue through Dec. 18.

Merkin Concert Hall is located within the Kaufman Center at 129 West 67th Street. Tickets are available by calling (212) 501-3339. Visit www.kaufman-center.org for more information.
