No Way to Treat a Lady Plays Michigan's Meadow Brook Jan. 4-29

By Kenneth Jones
04 Jan 2006

Following its autumn 2005 run at the BoarsHead Theatre in Lansing, Douglas T. Cohen's darkly comic musical No Way to Treat a Lady begins performances Jan. 4, at Meadow Brook Theatre in metro Detroit.

Directed by Meadow Brook managing director John M. Manfredi, the co-production with BoarsHead is MBT’s first musical of the 2005-06 season. This production marks the Michigan premiere of the musical.

It's billed as "a comic cat and mouse thriller that follows an unemployed Broadway actor whose troubled relationship with his mother transformed him into a ruthless killer."

The musical won the Outer Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk Award for Best Musical. Composer-lyricist Cohen's credits include the musicals Children's Letters to God, the Broadway-aimed The Opposite of Sex, and The Gig, Barnstormer, Glimmerglass and Boozy.

Andrew Huff plays Christopher "Kit" Gill, "the Lipstick Killer wanting to calm the never-ending taunting he feels from his deceased mother"; Chicago actor Alan Ball plays Detective Morris Brummell, "an average guy living with his mother who must battle the ambition Kit unleashes within him"; Lansing actress and Broadway veteran Jennifer Joan Joy plays Sarah Stone, Morris' girlfriend; Kate Willinger plays Flora, Morris' well-intentioned but often tormenting mother, plus multiple roles of the elderly-women victims in the production.

Performances play Jan. 4-29 at Meadow Brook Theatre, in Rochester, MI. The troupe is one of the longstanding Equity companies in Michigan. For more information, visit www.mbtheatre.com.
