Wright, Harney and Lackey Set for Readings of Rosa Parks Musical

C. Kelly Wright will star in the title role of Rosa Parks, the new musical which will receive staged readings at the Queens Theatre in the Park beginning Nov. 5.

The Civil Rights heroine is conjured in the 2009 Richard Rodgers Award-winning musical that has book and lyrics by Jeff Hughes, with music by Scott Ethier. Daniella Topol directs the free public presentations, to take place Nov. 5 at 7:30 PM and Nov. 7 at 3 PM and 8 PM. Lisa DeSpain serves as musical director.

Wright, who headlined Caroline, or Change for TheatreWorks in California, stars as Rosa Parks in a company that also boasts Tony winner Ben Harney (Dreamgirls), stage veteran Herndon Lackey (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Lovemusik), William Jackson Harper (Ruined), Shannon Antalan (Caroline, or Change), Michael Genét (Lestat), Chauncey Allen Bellamy, Jason C. Brown and Libya V. Pugh.

The musical centers on the Montgomery, AL, woman who refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger in 1955. Parks was called the Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement.

Following the Queens presentations, Rosa Parks is also slated to receive staged readings at Playwrights Horizons Nov. 12-14.
