The Play Company Brings Arabian Night to New York, May 31

By Ernio Hernandez
31 May 2006

The Play Company presents the New York premiere of German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig's Arabian Night as translated by David Tushingham and directed by Trip Cullman.

The work begins its New York run May 31 and opens June 12 at The East 13th Street Theatre. The show is slated through July 1.

Arabian Night is described as "an erotic urban fantasy... [A] nocturnal adventure, set in an anonymous housing complex, [which] is part fairy tale, part noir thriller and part nightmare." The story follows the lives of five individuals which become intertwined on a hot summer night when the building's water supply mysteriously disappears.

The cast features Roxanna Hope (After the Fall, The Women), Piter Marek ("The Grid," "The Education of Max Bickford"), Brandon Miller (Hannah and Martin), Stelio Savante (110 Stories, Murder In The First), Jicky Schnee ("Hope & Faith," "The Jury").

The design team includes Louisa Thompson (set), Katherine Roth (costume), Lenore Doxsee (lighting) and Bart Fasbender (sound).

Cullman has — within the last year — directed The Wooden Breeks, Dog Sees God, Manic Flight Reaction and Swimming in the Shallows. Other credits include Off-Broadway's Last Sunday in June and Roulette and served as assistant director to Joe Mantello on Take Me Out.

The Play Company has previously presented Indian playwright Vijay Tendulkar's Sakharam Binder as well as Brooke Berman's Smashing (directed by Cullman) and Northern Ireland scribe Gary Mitchell's Trust. This season the troupe brought Leslie Ayvazian's Lovely Day to the stage with director Blair Brown.

Tickets for Arabian Night at The East 13th Street Theatre, 136 East 13th Street (between Third and Fourth Ave.) can be purchased by calling(212) 279-4200. For more information on The Play Company, visit them on the web at www.playco.org.
