PLAYBILL.COM'S CUE & A: Tom Hewitt

By Ernio Hernandez

Tom Hewitt
Tom Hewitt

Tom Hewitt — current star of Broadway's Chicago revival — fills out Playbill.com's questionnaire with random facts, backstage trivia and pop culture tidbits.

Full given name: Thomas Allen Hewitt
Hometown: Victor, Montana
Zodiac sign: Pisces
Audition song: "I Want to Be With You" from Golden Boy
First Broadway show ever saw: I think it was Equus with Anthony Perkins and Tom Hulce.
Most played song on your iPod: "Free At Last" by Antony and the Johnsons
Web obsession: Actors Federal Credit Union
Last book you read: "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy
Must-see TV show: "Dexter" (with a prayer for the return of "Deadwood")
Last good movie you saw: "Julie and Julia." It's loaded with New York actors.
Favorite board game: Apples to Apples
Performer you would drop everything to go see: Bette Midler (and I have).
Pop culture guilty pleasure: XM Radio's 20 on 20
First stage kiss: At 16 as Tony Kirby in You Can't Take It With You with the Bitterroot Valley Players. Alice slipped me the tongue.
Favorite pre-/post-show meal: Pre-show: Sushi. Post-show: Chorus Boy
How you got your Equity card: As the second messenger in Iphigenia at Aulis at the McCarter Theater in 1982
Worst onstage mishap: In 1983 on a bus-and-truck of Gigi, I drove an electric car into an off-stage light tower sending it crashing to the stage. It was spectacular.
Who have you played on "Law & Order"? Which edition? I played an a-hole soap opera actor in a scene with Jerry Orbach on "L and O."
Worst costume ever: An orange and pink moo-moo in Antony and Cleopatra. (I was playing Antony, bitches). As I passed the Egyptian guards, they would whisper "Mrs. Roper… It's Mrs. Roper!"
Pet's name: Mac. He's a Shelty. And possibly the best dog in the world.
Favorite junk food: Deep fried anything.
Who would play you in the movie? Young Roddy McDowell in the first half and George Clooney in the second.
Worst job you ever had: Telephone solicitor for Montgomery Ward Auto Club.
TV or commercial gig you most enjoyed: I do the voice-overs for several TV and radio ads for Broadway shows and tours. I feel like I’m part of the team.
Leading lady/man role you've been dying to play: Okay, here's the deal with me and roles. I've played great roles in crappy productions and insignificant roles in shows that changed my life. For me it's about being part of a great theatrical experience… okay, Sweeney Todd.
If you had to play one role (you've already done) for the rest of your life, which would it be? No question. Billy Flynn in Chicago. Great part, three great songs, one fabulous tuxedo, surrounded by fun, smart, sexy people. The best job I've ever had. Many Billys would agree with me.
